Learning Profile

Profile L - ok, so I'm profile L. Most of the things it says about me are true, like I'm good at sports and I like to fiddle with things while taking in information. I don't think I learn best when I am sitting on my own without other students next to me because I feel that having other students around me makes me feel like I have someone there to talk to if I get stuck, or if I run out of ideas, like say we were thinking of ideas for a story. I might not know what to write and one of my friends can give me an idea of what would sound good. Even though it says that sitting on my own is a benefit, I strongly disagree, I think I learn best when I am in an environment where other students are around me to support me. I also feel I learn best when I have something to play around with like a pen or a pencil, so I can fiddle with it while I am thinking of ideas.

Being an L profile I do not perform well when under stress, therefore I can't stand it when the teacher is saying ten million different things all at the same time and then asking us to do a work sheet or reflection on what she just told us - it puts pressure on me and I dislike it a lot. In my head I am saying "WHAT DID YOU JUST SAY? I didn't know what you said you were talking in a fast pace languge". I think every now again I need to just take a deep breath and try to process what is happening in the class and pay more attention to the words coming out of the teachers mouth. I feel I need to relax more and not try to do everything at once.

When Mr. Whiting came to talk to us in class he told us a few exercises to help us concentrate when under stress. I think drawing lazy 8's on the desk will help me when I am learning. I also think that if I can't think of what the answer is on a test, then getting up and walking around may help me to relax and take time to think. Possibly drawing on a peice of paper may help me feel not so stressed, also if there was some nice calm music in the background then it may help me concentrate.

I would like my teachers to know that under stress I will not perform as well as I would if I was relaxed and calm. If my teachers would let me have a peice of paper next to me during a test so I can doodle on to make me feel more floaty and not so squeezed up together, like a rubber band tied tightly around a plastic bag, then I might be able to get the correct answer more quickly. To all my teachers - if you try to say to many things at once I will not get anything you said and if I look like a frozen tub of ice cream looking at you like I just saw a ghost, then it might tell you that I didn't understand anything you said!!!!!

Collaborative Literature Circle

What are The Benefit of Working with a Partner?

One benefit to working with a partner is that if you are doing something wrong, like when you are working on something, you might not see that it is wrong but your partner, who is not working on it can see what you are doing that isn't right. Like for example, your passage might not be the most important thing, infact it might be the least important thing in the whole book and there is a way more important passage right infront of your eyes that you couldn't see but they could. Another reason - a partner is a good thing to have when working on literature circles. Your partner can give you feedback on things that might effect your grade like, your partner may have written a very large response to the question and you might have written a tiny response, so your partner can help you undestand how you can improve but not only the response but how you interpret the actual question. Your partner could help you to make your question more interesting like for example "Why did the snow stop Milly getting food" you could change it to say "What effect does the snow have on Milly and how she is living?" This will make the reader more interested in what you have to say. Last but not least, you can BRAINSTORM with your partner and get more ideas than you could get on your own and then you will have a wider range of ideas that you can choose and put in the literature circle to make your literature circle the BEST in the whole world or just in your class and you will get full marks!

What Are Some of The Challeges with Working with a Partner?

One challenge with working with a partner is letting them down, because say you were to leave the assignment until the night before it was due, your partner may feel realy bad like you haven't done enough work and they might feel you let them down and worry that it is going to get them a bad grade. Also if you did leave it to the last night something might happen like there is a huge thunder storm and your house got hit by lightning or maybe the power goes off and you cant use the computer, If any of these things were to happen, you will get a bad grade for sure because you wouldn't even have your work for a start and your teacher might feel you don't work well with a partner. Another challenge is if you are working with someone you don't get along with you might have a hard time communicating with each other.

New understanding about the Novel

I have learnt that working as a team is much better than working alone, even when you are being rejected by others you have to keep trying to be accepted. It is better to collaborate with others than try to go solo. In the novel Julie (Miyax) realises that sometime things happen and you have to let others help you like when Jelo stolle her pack and she was hungry, Kapu brought her a leg of caribou to eat and she repaid him by cooking it and giving him a little, this shows that sometimes you have to let others help you and not just think you can do it on your own.

What role did geographic resources play in the the development of Malaysia?

One of the important reasons Malaysia is wealthy is because of where it is located and how much trade it gets from other places. Every day countrys like Malaysia have stocks from all over the world being shipped in and also gets put on an aroplane and flown over here, but other places like small islands don't get big ships with lots of differrent things on them passing by. Another thing about Malaysia is where it is located. Big ships pass by Malaysia on the way to Singapore and when traders pass by to get to the pacific ocean they stop to here take a break and then they can trade. Malaysia is most popular for palm oil and is making a lot of money from it. When you fly in to Kuala Lumpur if you look out of the window of the aeroplane every direction foward backward side to side every hill that you can see is dominated by big palm trees which that traders use to trade for other important supplys like wood. Palm oil seems like it is doing a big benifit to Malaysia but the truth is it's not! To plant palm oil they cut down all the other trees and cut down all the animals like lizards and monkeys homes away just to plant the palms but, nothing under them can grow so they are killing the undergrowth and the wildlife that lives in the lush undergowth. In time I hope the MalaysianGovernment will see what damage they are doing to their own land and I hope they will se how gready they are being because at the endd of the day they only plant it to get lots of money. Traders still plant palm oil because they are getting a lot of money and goods from it. Another reason Malaysia is so wealthy is because like most countrys Malaysia started to farm instead of just gathering.

Along time ago back when people were gathering they werent as wealthy because they relied on the animals for food but when people began to farm they could domesticate animals like sheep and cattel to stay in the fences and do as they say they could also get the fatter ready for them to eat also it helped them raise them for their own purposes and didn't have to move and follow where the animals went and try to catch them which turned out to injur or kill one of the members of the comunitie. Instead they could relax and settle down in one place and build housses this has also effected how long we live because farming has allowed us to live longer because we don't get injured by the wild animals. We could also be well protected from harsh weather in houses that were made out of bricks and tree branches that we had time to build because we werent following the wild animals this was very important because if we didn't have houses we would be still be living in caves which wouldn't keep many of us happy esspecially girls we don't like to camp and living for many years in a smelly dirty cave would be tourcher.

So Malaysia is wealthy mainly because of where it is located - the ships passing by allow trade but also the Malays started farming so they live longer and don't have to live in smelly dirty caves.

My Point of View From a Mud Skipper

What a boring day! Honestly you are lucky you're not a mud skipper like me. All we do is skip around on mud all day, every day. See how boring that must be. Hey whats that? Look, a crab!   Yummmm food! numm numm numm that tastes so good.  Where were we, oh yes I remember. I was telling you how boring it is to be me, well a while ago my ancestors - OK my great grand parents, were attacked by a group of your species, humans or something like that. Some were killed, others just badly injured the rest of us have been praying since that they won't come again, because who wants to be stepped on? Ouch it must hurt, especially because they're so tall like giants. Wow why is the ground moving? whats that noise? whats that?.......

It's here our worst nightmare. Hey Mark come here, prepare everyone we're going to earn our territory back with WAR. That's right even if it means the worst. Every one ready I'll take that as a yes ATTACK... yes Baylee go get into his boot and suck his feet that will show him. Noooooooooo there goes Bob squashed just like that silly fish. Maybe I can make friends with a crab and he can get his friends to nip some of them. Hey you yeah you can you get your friends to... Ally why did you eat him OK plan B every one hide and yes panic, head for the hole. Watch out for that boot, scatter left and right forward and backward. Dive into the mud hole quick...

Have they gone? Look at that only six of us were killed and three injured. Oh well there is more of us alive, one hundred in our community. We should probably clean our homes from fallen mud, some will have to be repaired because they were stood on. Hey look over there what is it? I think it's a boot that they left behind, that's rare! Lets dig a hole and put the boot in and have it as a base for if they ever come again because it looks well protective, so less of us will die. So while me and my family and friends are repairing our village I bid you farewell and one day we will meet again goodbye.

Ally why did you eat the poor crab

A Time I Saw Bullying

At my old school I was in the locker room changing for swimming and one student was changing in the toilet, a bunch of other girls were there and they decided they wanted to have some fun and play a few tricks on her. They completely ignored me standing there observing them and went up to the door where the student was changing. One of them noticed part of her underwear was sticking out from underneath the door she pulled it out and held it. The student shouted for her to give it back but they didn't, instead they took it outside and showed every one her underwear and to make matters worse was that all the boys were out there. I was left standing there almost paralyzed not knowing what to say or what to do so I left the locker room and went outside leaving the poor student crying in the bathroom.

I think if I saw this happening again I would go up to the girls and tell them to give it back to the student or I would go to the teacher and tell her what they did and see what would happen from there. This year at ISKL I am going to stand up for myself and others if they are being bullied and I will try to make ISKL a safe and happy place for all students to be!

A Time I Showed Courage

I showed courage when I was 3 years old. It was late afternoon in England and we were at a small party at my mums friends house - they lived on a farm so they had lots of pets, one of which was a donkey. The lady said he was a very kind donkey and wouldn't hurt any one, but she was wrong.

We climbed through the fence into his paddock and were playing around with the donkey stroking him and even attempting to ride him but he was too lazy so we left him and went to eat dinner. Later me and my mum went to say goodbye to him, we went in his stable and he knocked me down to the floor and was stamping on me, my mum picked me up and threw me over a fence but the donkey was about to charge at her, so mum punched him on the nose. I seemed fine, or so they thought.

Three days later we were at my aunties house, I was sitting on my mums knee and she was telling them about the incident with the donkey. As soon as my auntie looked at my arm she knew that it was broken. They whipped me off to the hospital and went in to see the doctor. I didn't like him, he pulled my poor arm out of my jumper to take a closer look, I didn't cry but looked at him and yes, he knew that it was broken so he put my arm in a cast. It was a plain white one but in a week he said I could have a different colour that was more exciting.

I showed courage because even though I had a broken arm I had not made a fuss and at the hospital even though the doctor pulled my arm I did not cry.

What do the artifacts tell us about the lives of early humans?

Artifacts show us how the early humans lived, where they lived, when they lived and what they were like. Artifacts such as cave art tools are made of sharpened stones to sculpt and engrave objects and cave walls. The paint brushes used to create the cave paintings were believed to be made out of moss, fur or even hair from a human. To make the softer texture on the cave paintings for the horses winter coats they may have also blown through hollow bird bones. Scientists believe that the paints were made by grinding minerals into powder and then mixed together with animal fat or vegetable oil to make different colours.

The prehistoric spear found in France, had a leaping horse on the top of it, scientists believe that it could have been a good luck charm for the hunter to protect him or her while they were out finding food or it could have been a symbol that represented the clan it belonged to. The artist had carved hundreds of tiny dashes on the horses head so it must have been very important to the clan. It is ten inches long and is believed to be made 18,000 years ago.

Another artifact found are two bison clay sculptures in France they were sculpted from gold coloured clay it could be that they show the cave belonged to a certain clan or it could be that they were part of a coming of age ceremony held inside the cave. The scientists think they were made about 10,000 to 14,000 years ago.

Artifacts are really interesting because they help solve mysteries of the past and are records of important events.

I would like to be an archaeologist...

.... because they can tell us what happend in the past by looking and dating artifacts that they  dig up or find.  I would enjoy searching through hidden caves and tombs to uncover sparkling treasures. In the tomb of Tutankhamun there were lots of golden treasures buried with him as the Egyptians belived that they needed to take their wealth with them into the next world.

This is the first sighting of the mummy of Tutankhamun

I think it would be cool to be an archaealogist because I would get to travel all over the world to many exotic places which not many other people get to see. It would be really exciting to trek into a jungle and find a secret that has been hidden for trillions of years.

Uncovering a new site would make me famous like Howard Carter in the 1920's who discovered the tomb of Tutankhamun. Or I would like to be a famous archaeologist like Indiana Jones in the movies, he was a cool guy!
